Release Notes: Tally CLI v2.4.0

Project: Tally CLI (fictional open source tool, tally.example) Release date: 22 October 2026 Compared with: v2.3.2

Tally is a command line tool that counts and reports usage of feature flags across a codebase. This release adds JSON output for CI, speeds up large scans and fixes two long-standing bugs on Windows.

Highlights

--format json for every command. CI pipelines can now parse results without scraping text.
Scans are about 3x faster on large repos. Tally now skips files listed in .gitignore by default and reads files in parallel.
Stale flag report. tally stale lists flags that have not changed in a set number of days.

New features

Added tally stale --days <n> to list flags whose definitions have not been touched in n days. Default is 90. (#412)
Added --format json to scan, stale and report. The schema is documented in docs/json-output.md. (#398)
Added --fail-on-unused to scan. Exits with code 2 when a flag is defined but never read, so CI can block the merge. (#405)

Improvements

Respect .gitignore and .tallyignore by default. Use --no-ignore to scan everything. (#401)
Parallel file reading with a worker pool sized to CPU count. A 40,000 file monorepo went from 38s to 12s in our benchmark. (#407)
Clearer error when the config file has an unknown key. Tally now names the key and the line. (#410)

Bug fixes

Fixed path matching on Windows when the repo path contains spaces. (#389)
Fixed CRLF line endings causing flags at the end of a file to be missed. (#393)
Fixed report printing an empty table when no flags were found. It now prints "No flags found". (#409)

Breaking changes

Ignored files are now skipped by default. If you relied on scanning generated or vendored files, add --no-ignore or list the paths in include in tally.config.json.
The --json flag from v2.2 is removed. Use --format json. It was deprecated in v2.3.0.

Upgrade notes

Update with your package manager, for example npm i -g tally-cli@2.4.0.
Run tally scan once and compare the flag count with your last run. A drop usually means ignored files are now skipped.
Replace any --json usage in CI scripts with --format json.

Deprecations

tally list is now an alias of tally scan --summary and will be removed in v3.0.
