Design Procedure

  • To design a slab base for a column, we start by noting down the properties of the section from steel table.
  • The thickness of the flange (tf) is 11.6 mm and the thickness of the web (tw) is 8.3 mm.
  • We calculate the bearing strength of the concrete using the formula: bearing strength = 0.45 * fck
  • Next, we determine the required area of the base using the formula: area = factor load / bearing strength.

Area Calculation

  • The factor load (p) is given as 1000 kN/m2.
  • Using this value, we calculate the area to be provided for the base.
  • The calculated area is 11.31 m2.
  • We then determine the dimensions of the base by considering the length (l) and width (b) requirements.

Base Dimensions

  • The length (l) of the base is determined as 390 mm.
  • The width (b) of the base is determined as 290 mm.
  • We confirm that the area of the base meets the requirements.
  • These dimensions will be used for the construction of the slab base for the column.

Welded Connection Design

  • In addition to the design of the slab base, we also need to design the welded connection between the base and the column.
  • The length of the fillet weld is determined as 1493 mm.
  • The size of the weld is calculated based on the thickness of the thicker part, which is 12 mm.
  • Based on the shape of the weld, the minimum size is determined as 5 mm and the maximum size as 6.8 mm.

Final Design

  • The final design includes a slab base with dimensions of 390 mm (length) and 290 mm (width).
  • The welded connection between the base and the column has a fillet weld size of 6 mm.
