Make a spreadsheet with Gemini CLI
Product teams can hand Gemini CLI a product spec and get a sprint backlog with stories, points, owners and acceptance checks. With the MagicSlides MCP server, the backlog is saved as a spreadsheet the team can review before planning.
Set up MagicSlides in Gemini CLI (one time)
Run this once, then log in from inside Gemini CLI.
gemini mcp add --transport http magicslides https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp/mcp auth magicslides- 1.Run the command. Add --scope user to make it available in every folder.
- 2.Start gemini and run /mcp auth magicslides, then log in in the browser.
- 3.Ask for a deck. Gemini CLI calls the MagicSlides tools and prints the links.
Example: what you type in Gemini CLI
Read @specs/onboarding-revamp.pdf and break it into a sprint backlog: story, type, priority, points, assignee from Ana, Kenji, Ravi and Lucia, dependencies and an acceptance check. Save it as a MagicSlides sheet.
- Read the onboarding spec PDF passed with @path
- Split it into 10 stories across features, analytics, a bug fix, chores and an experiment
- Set dependencies so sign-in work lands before the email verification change
- Called create_sheet with 11 rows
Sprint 42 backlog is saved as a MagicSlides sheet with 10 stories and 27 points. Four P0 stories are the core of the sprint, and MOB-314 waits on both sign-in stories.
| ID | Story | Type | Priority | Points | Assignee | Status | Depends on | Acceptance check |
| MOB-311 | Replace 5-screen intro with 2 screens | Feature | P0 | 5 | Ana | In progress | Intro completes in under 20s in usability test | |
| MOB-312 | Sign in with Apple on iOS | Feature | P0 | 3 | Kenji | To do | New account created and linked | |
| MOB-313 | Sign in with Google on Android | Feature | P0 | 3 | Ravi | To do | New account created and linked | |
| MOB-314 | Skip email verification until first purchase | Feature | P1 | 5 | Ana | To do | MOB-312, MOB-313 | Unverified users can browse and save |
| MOB-315 | Track onboarding funnel events | Analytics | P0 | 2 | Lucia | In review | 6 events visible in dashboard | |
| MOB-316 | Permission prompt for notifications after first save | Feature | P1 | 2 | Kenji | To do | Prompt never shown on first launch | |
| MOB-317 | Fix keyboard covering password field on small screens | Bug | P1 | 1 | Ravi | Done | Field visible on 4.7 inch screen |
This is the real output from that prompt, made with the MagicSlides MCP. Open it to click through or download it.

- 2.Run /mcp auth magicslides inside Gemini CLI
- 3.Pass your spec with @path and ask for a sprint backlog as a MagicSlides sheet
- 4.Open the editor link in sprint planning and adjust points together
Tool used: create_sheet. Prefer a web app? AI spreadsheet generator does the same without an agent.
FAQ
Can Gemini CLI read a PDF spec?
Yes. It reads local files including PDFs when you pass them with @path.
Is this the Gemini app?
No. This uses Gemini CLI in the terminal, set up with gemini mcp add and /mcp auth.
Can I change the backlog after planning?
Yes. Edit it in MagicSlides, or ask Gemini CLI to update it with get_sheet and update_sheet.
Why does the link ask for sign-in?
Sheets return an editor link, and the MagicSlides editor needs you to be signed in.
