Make a PowerPoint with Codex CLI
The OpenAI Codex CLI can write a design review deck while it works in your repo. Here it produced a 6-slide proposal for adding per-key rate limits to a fictional public API.
Set up MagicSlides in Codex CLI (one time)
Two commands: add the server, then log in.
codex mcp add magicslides --url https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp
codex mcp login magicslides[mcp_servers.magicslides]
url = "https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp"- 1.Run codex mcp add, then codex mcp login and approve in the browser.
- 2.Start codex (or use codex exec "…" for one-off runs).
- 3.Ask for a deck. Codex calls MagicSlides and prints the present link.
Example: what you type in Codex CLI
Make a 6-slide design review deck for adding per-key rate limiting to our public API: the problem, token bucket proposal, limits, rollout plan, and the decision we need. Use noir-bold.
- Outlined a design review: cover, problem, proposal, how it works, rollout, decision
- Called get_template_schema (noir-bold, 6 slides)
- Wrote the copy, limits and rollout metrics
- Called create_presentation_from_slots with stock images
The 6-slide rate limiting review deck is ready, ending with the shadow-mode decision for Monday. Links to present, PPTX and PDF are below.
This is the real output from that prompt, made with the MagicSlides MCP. Open it to click through or download it.
How it works
- 1.Run codex mcp add magicslides --url https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp
- 2.Run codex mcp login magicslides and sign in
- 3.Ask Codex for the deck, or run it with codex exec "<prompt>"
- 4.Open the present link or download the PPTX
Tool used: create_presentation_from_slots. Prefer a web app? Topic to PPT does the same without an agent.
FAQ
Can I run this without the interactive UI?
Yes. Use codex exec "<prompt>" for a non-interactive run, for example from a script.
Can Codex read my design doc first?
Yes. Codex reads local files and runs shell commands, so it can base the slides on a doc or code in your repo.
Is there an API key to manage?
No. Log in once with codex mcp login magicslides, which uses OAuth.
Does it cost AI credits?
No. Codex writes the slide copy, so the deck costs 0 MagicSlides AI credits.
