Turn a web page into a PPT with Codex CLI
Codex CLI runs shell commands, so it can curl a release post and turn it into slides in one run. Here it read the Rust 1.80.0 announcement and made a 5-slide brief on what the team can simplify after upgrading.
Set up MagicSlides in Codex CLI (one time)
Two commands: add the server, then log in.
codex mcp add magicslides --url https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp
codex mcp login magicslides[mcp_servers.magicslides]
url = "https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp"- 1.Run codex mcp add, then codex mcp login and approve in the browser.
- 2.Start codex (or use codex exec "…" for one-off runs).
- 3.Ask for a deck. Codex calls MagicSlides and prints the present link.
Example: what you type in Codex CLI
codex exec "Curl https://blog.rust-lang.org/2024/07/25/Rust-1.80.0/ and make a 5-slide upgrade brief for our Rust team with MagicSlides. Include a before and after table."
Source used: Announcing Rust 1.80.0 - Rust Blog
- Ran curl on the Rust 1.80.0 announcement and stripped the HTML (about 1,150 words)
- Listed LazyCell and LazyLock, the unexpected_cfgs checks, exclusive range patterns and the stabilized APIs
- Called get_template_schema (responsive-grid, 5 slides)
- Wrote the slot copy and called create_presentation_from_slots
Created a 5-slide Rust 1.80 brief with a before and after table, the key stabilized APIs, a timeline from 1.70 to 1.80, and an upgrade checklist. Links to present, PPTX and PDF are in the output.
This is the real output from that prompt, made with the MagicSlides MCP. Open it to click through or download it.
How it works
- 1.Run codex mcp add magicslides --url https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp.
- 2.Run codex mcp login magicslides and log in.
- 3.Ask Codex to curl the URL and build a deck, or use codex exec for a one-shot run.
- 4.Open the present link, or download the PPTX or PDF.
Tool used: create_presentation_from_slots. Prefer a web app? URL to PPT does the same without an agent.
FAQ
Can I run this without the interactive UI?
Yes. codex exec with your prompt runs it non-interactively and prints the deck links when it finishes.
How does Codex get the page content?
It runs shell commands like curl and reads the result, so any public URL works.
Can it add details from my own repo?
Yes. Codex reads local files, so it can check your Cargo.toml or code against the release notes before writing slides.
Is there a cost per deck?
Codex writes the copy, so the bring-your-own-content path costs 0 MagicSlides AI credits.
