Turn a spreadsheet into a PPT with Claude Code
Claude Code can download a dataset, run a Python script on it in your terminal and check the numbers before any slide is written. With the MagicSlides MCP added, it turns those results into a deck you can present or download as PPTX.
Set up MagicSlides in Claude Code (one time)
Run this once. Add --scope user to make MagicSlides available in every project.
claude mcp add --transport http magicslides https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp/mcpPick magicslides and log in with MagicSlides in the browser tab that opens.
- 1.Run the command in your terminal.
- 2.Start claude, type /mcp, select magicslides and log in.
- 3.Ask for a deck. Claude Code calls the MagicSlides tools and prints the links.
Example: what you type in Claude Code
Download owid-energy-data.csv from github.com/owid/energy-data, compare the electricity mix for World, Germany, US, China and India in 2015 vs 2024 with pandas, and make a 6-slide deck from the results.
Source used: Our World in Data Energy dataset (owid-energy-data.csv)
- Ran curl to download owid-energy-data.csv (9.2 MB)
- Ran a pandas script for renewables, solar, wind and coal share of electricity, 2015 vs 2024
- Called get_template_schema (noir-bold, 6 slides)
- Wrote the slot copy and called create_presentation_from_slots with stock images
Built a 6-slide deck: renewables rose from 22.97% to 31.94% of world electricity, solar output grew 8.4x to 2,143 TWh, and Germany reached 58.6% renewables. Present link, PPTX and PDF are in the result.
This is the real output from that prompt, made with the MagicSlides MCP. Open it to click through or download it.
How it works
- 1.Run claude mcp add --transport http magicslides https://www.magicslides.app/api/mcp/mcp in your terminal.
- 2.Start Claude Code and run /mcp to log in with MagicSlides.
- 3.Point it at a local CSV or XLSX, or a URL to download, and say what to compute.
- 4.Open the present link or download the PPTX from the reply.
Tool used: create_presentation_from_slots. Prefer a web app? Excel to PPT does the same without an agent.
FAQ
Can Claude Code compute the numbers itself?
Yes. It runs shell commands such as curl and python, so it can download the file, run pandas and show you the output before it writes slides.
Can I use a file that is already on my machine?
Yes. Claude Code reads local files, so you can give it a path to a CSV or XLSX in your project.
How do I log in to MagicSlides from Claude Code?
After adding the server with claude mcp add, run /mcp and pick MagicSlides. Login is OAuth, there is no API key.
Does it cost AI credits?
No. Claude Code writes the slide copy, and the bring-your-own-content path costs 0 MagicSlides AI credits.
